Poem
A long verse on an even longer subject The eye of most everything is money Their power over us is unsurpassed Hey, got the dough? May call me “honey” To get away, to buy me things, to have a blast We name them greenbacks, moolah and bitcoin The cash, the buck, the loot and also bread The reason banks so often get purloined Large stash imbeds wrong thinking into heads “Dead presidents” release you from your chains To set you free, grow wings upon your back When you’re a jerk, they cause severe pains To crash and burn, you lose it all, left bareback The worry watching shares every hour Or anguish how to live ‘till next paycheck Those C-notes are true evil, pure power And power makes us be on “call and beck” Those dreamin’ find lottery’s quick-earning Wins as reliable as finding pirates’ chest Amass the fortune simpletons are yearning The truth is so much harder to digest Windfall upon the death of childless auntie Dogfight in court when you’re not in will Disparity between the castle vs. shanty Betrayal and loyalty, extortion, hunger, kill Your Porsche attracts the fairest of dames Those wheels are telling story of “big shot” The smell of money, like the smell of fame Entice the gentler sex to aim for jackpot The bigger home stands over endless pasture Fine art assortment, private club and serfs The bank account with a sense of rapture And constant fight protecting own turf Them dollars buy kids’ better education Retirement and travel, faster cars Pay debts of the entire nations And one day shall propel the man to Mars When you have money, it’s civilization Knocks on your door and bearing iPhone And not? Then poverty, stagnation With struggle in the desperation zone Corruption, greed, offshore secure storage Kidnappings, ransoms, power grabs and war Enriched divorcees, hopes dashed and forage Bad neighborhoods are many towns’ sore There ain’t anything around more divisive Lend to your girl and quickly find out To give is joy, collecting is derisive She will be gone and you’re in full burn-out Success and money tell their own story The man is judged by what the man is worth Above the law, above the purgatory It’s true, the banks rule everything on Earth Part of folklore, the fools are separated From cash, the most evil root “The money talks”, “time’s money” not debated And "mattress money", hidden joyous loot Most every earthling craves the easy money They say the money aren’t ever free Huge mystery, yet question ringing funny What’s a beguiling, wanted “money tree”? We all want some. Enough so we don’t care How next invoice about to be paid Small pleasures, shoes and clothes to wear With future to be welcomed, not afraid For hope or misery, sunshine or utter darkness The money act as most sincere test Reveal the world in very honest starkness The spice of life by which we’re so obsessed The old and new, seed money drive us forward And keep economies on most even keel The fuel of dreams, about moving onward With sense of urgency and even bigger zeal Be generous with those less secure Give from the heart, and karma pays you back As force of good, with money, to be sure Be shining light on someone’s shaky track There’s yet a thing to be explained, sonny From your first breath to eerie graveyard True love is unredeemed for money For most else there is a Mastercard © 2022
