Paddy His name is Padraig Torrin McWheaten of County Cork, esq. – Paddy for short! He is Celtic mischief with deep brown eyes the color of Irish sod, a big, black gumdrop nose and a wavy wheat colored coat always ready to play, go for a walk or a ride! Ready to bestow wet, sloppy kisses anytime day or night or when he thinks you should be out of bed in the morning. “Froggin” by the warm fireplace at night is the simply the best, in his opinion. He has definitely taken a big lick on the Blarney Stone! Ever since Paddy opened his eyes at three weeks, inertia was not a concept he understood or cared about. He is high octane on four paws. If Paddy ever sits still you know he is plotting something, up to something or planning his next move. He is the living example of the saying: “When Irish eyes are smiling they are up to something!” His mantra is “People are great. Life is wonderful. And this dog business is terrific” and mischief oozes out of him like oil spewing from a newly discovered well. As a show dog, Paddy only tentatively endures a bath and rebelliously submits to the grooming table that gives him the freedom to be entered in dog shows across the country undaunted by trans-continental flights, long road trips and seeing more breeds of dogs than he could ever imagine. His kennel tag should read: “Highway to the Danger Zone.” “These paws are made for walkin’.” And, of course, “Bring it on!” That being said he is the original hambone strutting his stuff in the show ring from the very first time he was introduced to the dog show world. All attitude that clearly says: “Ain’t I something?!” Sweet and affectionate, humble he is not! And while he loves most other dogs his opinion of them is quite evident. “Nice to meet you! Too bad you’re not a Wheaten! This attitude has brought him many show wins and the title of champion! Now, in retirement, after fathering puppies, Paddy’s zest for life teaches us joy as he sleeps on his back showing us his best side; pulling up newly planted violas and chasing his beloved squirrels. Morning is truly the best part of his day as he greets each member of the household with his tail wagging at warp speed excitedly giving kisses anywhere he can land them. A true politician, he divides his time equally between all of us! And don’t bother trying to leave him out of a family gathering or party as he happily sleeps on everyone’s feet! Our fourth Wheaten Terrier has brought us much laughter, joy and so many smiles. So athletic! A true ambassador of the breed – all puppy then mature patriarch; smart then intellectually challenged; busy then easily bored; nosy then oblivious; perceptive then a complete airhead; chasing his tail or falling asleep where he stands; overflowing with love. Paddy is a gift of God just like his predecessors – Taffy, Snickers, Ted and even our Colorado mute, Kahlua. 3-24-23
