The Naming of Merlin's Cave
The Naming of Merlin’s Cave
below Tintagel’s aged frame
beneath the castles guardian walls
the sea swells darkly with the high tide
then thunders its secrets into a cave.
echoes of the soldiers tramp
across the roof, both cold and damp
and horses hooves leave little doubt
that battle rages near about
t’is then that Uther fulfilled his need
to conquer the Duke in word and deed
crept into the guarded castle keep
to lay with Lady Igraine in her sleep.
shape shifted into the goodly Knight
with Merlin’s magic and his might
he entered through the castle gate
surprising all for it was late.
Pendragon his cruel plans laid
created a bairn upon the maid
nine months hence the deed was done
the babe was born a strapping son
Merlin paced below the Iron gate
to take the child and mould its fate
beneath in cave he solemnly waited
until the hunt had wholly abated
then he fled north disguises many
some quite simple, some uncanny
took the boy to Scotland’s border
raised as son of a trusted lord there.
the rest of the tale is filled with magic
happy times and some quite tragic
but my job is done and here I end
for the rest, you must wait, my friend.
beginnings
no matter how well planned
often go awry.
endings find their own way.
