The Gift

You gave me a gift, but I didn’t open it. The beautiful package lay intact And I looked at it from time to time: Dusted around it, moved it even, but it remained pristine in its wrapping. Often I forgot it was there as it sat Unobtrusively amongst the chaos. Life scurrying by, its dramas erupting, There it remained, ribbon faded By the sunlight from the window. Then one day, in a rare moment of quiet, I saw it from the corner of my eye. I pulled a tiny piece of fraying ribbon And unfettered the intricate box. The lid moved as it became untied. Now I knew I had to look inside: It had lain unnoticed for so long - There was a promise wrapped in tissue, A hand for me to hold, and in a corner Almost hidden, was a heart of solid gold.,
