Summer Games
it was only yesterday
that i realized
you were not coming back
i found myself the sole spectator
to the game of hearts
and the joker laughed on with glee
love cancelled on the count of pain
the victor of nothing at all
you wear your smile well
as if it were your player’s uniform
throwing out promises with candlelight
catching all of my gentle emotions
for one brief moment
i was your most valuable player
you play the game well
better than i ever could
