Seize the Mind
The what ifs and the whys
They march upon my head
They come not as single spies
But as battalions instead
They fill my mind with sorrow
I'm besieged as they surround
They steal from my tomorrow
Any joy I would have found
Invading without cause
They manipulate my fears
And exploit the hidden flaws
In the way the truth appears
They weave a new reality
From what I think I know
One that will doubtful ever be
But which I can't let go
The what ifs and the whys
They sneak in like a thief
Compelling me to multiply
My tribute tax of grief
I pay costs that aren't mine
For woes that don't exist
And spend my bulk of time
Repairing things that don't need fixed
My walls in disrepair
My well is all dried out
Yet I'm only half aware
Of what I was concerned about
Distracted from my present
I obsess over my doubts
Which do nothing to prevent
Things I can do naught about
The what ifs and the whys
Make problems they don't solve
As I die a thousand times
To each fate I can't resolve
And yet for all my focus
I'm blinded to the theft
By fears that swarm like locust
Consuming all that's left
Though never do I find
That object of my dread
The horrors tormenting my mind
Are but mere shadows instead
There's not a need to borrow
For grief I'll never know
So don't worry for tomorrow
For its troubles are it's own
