Men Without Chests
The scholars say man is innately good.
He just needs training to do what he should.
Education will his nature improve,
and most of his imperfections remove.
God is not needed to help man break through,
much knowledge, reason, and science will do.
No need for old-fashioned values at all.
Rid man of these which his freedom forestalls.
After a century and more of this scheme,
has man accomplished his lofty pipe dream?
Knowledge in all fields has greatly increased,
but man’s nature has not grown in the least.
Man has access to more information,
but humans are still less educated.
Science is making people live longer,
but mankind is not morally stronger.
Man has the many means technology lends,
but has abandoned the few noble ends.
He has more contents but less contentment,
much wealth does not his happiness augment
The schools produce men with heads but no hearts,
void of a conscience, but very book smart.
They rule our lives and make our laws,
determine our rights and decide our cause.
Lewis predicted how the scheme would end.
A few smart men to the peak will ascend,
with much power and greed within their breasts,
the many being ruled by men without chests.
