Black Beauty

Black Beauty, my dear horse, I have for you a place of leisure where no more you’ll toil. A sugar cube I’ll give you – maybe two. You’ll paw the ground for me because I’ll spoil you like you so deserve! I’ve plenty of nice apple slices, carrots, cubes of hay and even some bananas, for my love for you is boundless. In a field you’ll play. Then if you get too hot, I’ll lead you to cool water where we’ll splash! Then down a lane I’ll ride you home, and so much more I’ll do: I’ll scratch your withers, stroke and braid your mane! Though "out to pasture," that's an awesome phase! Black Beauty, to your heart’s content, you’ll graze. Submitted for Robert James Liguori's A Notable Horse Poetry Contest

Horses deserve to roam free in a pasture as they need to exercise. I would spoil my horse too if I was lucky enough to have one. Loved this Andrea. Congratulations on your win. xxoo

A lovely new sonnet from the Sonneteer's prolific pen! Always enjoy your enjambments, but they seem to be in full force for this write. Someday soon, I hope to be out to pasture, grazing to my heart's content! Love this, best wishes in Michelle's contest, friend!

Thanks, I read the abbreviated version of it in my ESL students' book several years ago. The horses were treated miserably in those days before animal rights. The author of that classic novel helped society to know the horses' plight.

I think it is an elevated expression of humanity to desire paradisiacal wonderment for creatures on par with what we espouse for ourselves. Besides, it seems to me that in many cases, they are the worthier and nobler creation. Thanks for your lovely, sober tribute.
