Alone At the Holocaust Museum

ALONE AT THE HOLOCAUST MUSEUM rose early in the morning, indulged in a lovely quiche lorraine, ventured out alone. silence has a sound of its own. yes, there was the film, my first exposure - Kristallnacht – the night of broken glass S H A T T E R S the sterile space… alone, i enter the “gas chamber” - no one’s there, no screaming naked bodies. the only fear is in my mind – i must get out, feeling claustrophobic. exiting and to my right, a setup - a dummy behind a machine gun my pulse quickens, throat is dry. then to my left: hair cuttings, glasses, teeth, clothing - my eyes hurt as i read – many children were thrown into the ovens A L I V E. the horror constricts my brain. horrible to imagine one crazed serial murderer and this was an entire country. cruelty has sharp claws, hidden behind breath and flesh gifted by God. monsters have lovely hair, straight teeth, families preparing dinner, friends cheering with CLINKING CRYSTAL. going home, they smile, swing loved ones around, kiss their merry cheeks, and they R E E K with death. 10/14/2016

Kim, what a powerful poem about something terrible, unthinkable, but strangely, true.

A mighty and powerful telling of the horrors of the Holocaust, and how the ugly antisemitism that led to it still tragically echoes. A monumentous poem worthy of much.Thank you, Kim, for penning this important poem. God's eternal blessings to you. ~

Kim, I just read this poem you wrote in 2016. I is so deeply gripping and well written of the atrocities and horrors the Jews faced in the holocaust, so hard to read. Unspeakable wickedness. I know there is a God, and I know many who came home from their job smiling and swinging children joyfully while still wreaking of death, still wreak of death! Hell is a long, long time to think about the wickedness of such murderous horrors inflicted on the Jews. God bless you Kim.

Thank you, Bj! I went to the museum by myself. It was eerie and poignant. Never forget and yet many do.

This is a shattering poem that breaks apart any illusion people could have about the Holocaust. (Those who deny it.) I understand how you feel but could not do it. I think I would be sick. Thank you for sharing this poem. It is very important. Take care and stay safe. :-)

Wow, I feel like I was there with you. Traveling through history and considering these people's lives who carried out such horror and those who were victims to them. Vivid and emotional.

Thank you. It was quite an experience and surely not even close to the horrors experienced in the Holocaust. God bless!

WOW! That was beautifully written. It gave me chills. You may not be aware, many aren't, but we, the USA, gave those monsters sanctuary here under the "Paper Clip" program. We wanted their scientists and had to take the whole lot. As you point out, the rest of the people turned a blind eye and, thus, are also guilty. Thank you for writing this.

An excellent piece. Kim: It is true that evil can come from the least expected places. That is what makes it so scary and unpredictable.....Man is the darkest beast. I especially like how you wrote the word shatters, I hope this poem is read far and wide. Well done, SuZ

Kim - I think saying I loved Alone at the Holocaust Museum is not a true statement. However your words, form and description made me go cold. And that's what it's mean to do isn't it.How brave of you to go, I don't know that I have that kind of courage. Well done. Karen Steele

Thank you, Karen! I don’t know if I’d want to visit the actual places though to keep the memories of souls who died in such a place.

I read this poem several times. This is a brilliant poem! Its emotional power is also its moral power. Whether we think of the holocaust or not, the ghosts of this genocide follow us and as you say, we come to terms with this "alone." Thank you & please keep writing!

Thank you so much, Thomas! The museum sure made an impact. Perhaps the quietude was the other layer as so many died. The men, women and children.

Kim..excellent....I almost fainted when I heard Bidens healh choice said lives of people over 75 are not worth living. He, himself is Jewish. So all you wrote above Coukd happen again. Why not. We kill babies by the millions daily. Biden says no vaccine for old people.Ach tung! I wrote a poem about the pressures on Orthodox Jews ByCuomo ...nobody cared. They keep Judaism suppressed. Just as in Auschwitz. Jews are no longer safe. No Yeshivas, no synagogues. Never again is being eroded, fast. PR

If we don’t remember or care we are doomed to start this all over again. My parents are in early 80’s and have taken great care of their bodies. Just because they have fallen ill doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be cared for. God is watching.

You've captured the horror as well as anyone ever has. Horror beyond words, beyond feelings. (Now imagine that your relatives were gassed, and you'll know why I don't dwell much on the Holocaust. It's just too horrible to contemplate for many of us born in its shadow). Thank you for posting this. Best always, gw

I can’t stand to read anything that humanizes H$#@#&! Why even write a name! It makes me sick. So many people did stand courageous in the face of the horror. Be blessed my sweet friend.

You have written something that concerns me since I am Jewish. I have been to Israel and seen Yad Vashem. It is too bad that other terrible things have happened since than - in Rwanda, in Cambodia and in other places. Hope you have a great holiday season. I celebrated Chanukah and went to a party and a concert during the holiday. Peace & Love Matthew Anish

Your poem does justice to the horrors. Shalom Matthew Anish
