Narcissus
Narcissus, our new patron saint
Who hears each childish complaint
And says, “I know. I am aware
But tell me now, why should I care?”
The model of the lives we lead,
Of pride, of envy and of greed.
Who says, “I am the only one
Who matters. Let me have my fun!”
Narcissus, we enlightened pray
To follow your example every day.
You sat, unmoving, in one place
Enraptured by your own dear face.
Forsaking all for foolish pride,
A selfishness you couldn’t hide.
So, like you, we forsake truth
To worship self and callow youth.
Before ourselves we bend the knee
And make our wants priority.
Narcissus, we enlightened pray
To follow your example every day.
You showed us it is not enough
To just ignore the echoes of love.
Like you we see it as a pest.
We want ourselves! Forget the rest!
And though our outer beauty fade,
Our appetites must be obeyed.
So, Narcissus, we follow you
To think as you and so to do.
Narcissus, we enlightened pray
To follow your example every day.
O Narcissus, our patron saint
Who’s memory the gods would taint.
You are for us a model true
And so we live a life like you.
We see ourselves amazingly fair.
For others we don’t really care.
We cry out, “I’m the only one
Who matters. Let me have my fun!”
Narcissus, we enlightened pray
To follow your example every day.
