This is a play on two meanings to the same phrase... Apple of my eye. In scripture the phrase is speaking to God's protection. The apple of the eye is the pupil... think of something coming for your eye and what's your instinctive reaction? Close your eyes to protect them... brush whatever is attacking away from this vulnerable part of our bodies. God is telling us how he will instinctively protect us, his children, as he does the apple, pupil, of his eye.
The Second meaning...
This phrase has come to mean, someone very precious and special to us... they are the apple of our eye.
Psalm 17:8
