murders, mayhem, anarchy,
ravages and the ruins of wars...

Nature In Play
The Russians have taught me
that nothing has changed
Instead of Nazis and Fascists,
we have terrorists to blame
Whether Turgenev or Chekhov,
Tolstoy or Marx
When our nature’s in play
—much of life remains dark
(Wayne Pa.-Minella’s Diner: June, 2016)...

War and Peace
Praise the rights that all mankind
live together in sweet peace.
Damn the wrongs of bitter war...
choices...live or die.

The Carnival
And the revelers move in a parade
Belly dancers, clowns and people with masks
Ending with music, food and dance
This a preparation for the arrival of LENT
What kind of repentance is this ??
Parading your sins before the world ??
We have it in Goa and little clubs in Mumbai
I retreat into my silent zone.
Leo Tolstoy your words to me are like gold....

My Hermitage
This isolation
is not in vain.
By contemplation
I become sane.
My hermitage -
research and reflect;
Mirrors the image
of great architects.
From Plato to Poe,
From Tolstoy to Twain -
I'm beginning to grow,
My strength to regain.
And to rise from the flames-
shining again brilliant.
Calling stars by their names -
I'm free and resilient....

Putin's Long Tentacles
From Moscow to Kiev
It is not too far.
Putin wants to be
The new Russian Czar.
The Russian ballet
In Moscow's Bolshoi
Became a death dance
In Putin's war convoy.
Sanctions are sweet bullets
Never punish bad behavior
Always hurt innocent people
Never believe any nation's saviour.
Tolstoy, Gorki and Dostoewsky
Great works they wrote.
Putin's future biography
An odious bloody note....

Leo Tolstoy
"Yeah, Tolstoy,
the guy could write like he was carving his name
into a mountain.
A real heavyweight.
He saw the whole circus of life and didn’t blink.
Kings and peasants, love and death, all rolled into one.
Maybe too serious for his own good,
but that’s what made him real.
The man had guts,
a vision too big for most people to stomach.
When you ou read him, you felt it deep."...

Waiting
I often wondered how Tolstoy
found the time to write War and Peace.
I am now confident I know how,
In fact I am sure I know how.
He wrote it when for a hospital appointment he did show,
Without a cell phone to help the time flow,
So, he borrowed ink and feather,
To put a few words together,
The waiting seeming to take forever,
More words he put together,
Until the whole story was down on paper,
For his secretary to gather together,
While he was wheeled into theatre....
