"The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart" Helen Keller In deepest darkness I wander the street. Sounds looming, people rushing, don’t feel weak. Bravely stepping. Child’s laughter makes me smile. I come to the road with cars whizzing by. Sun’s rays upon my face, I feel the heat. Each stride to the unknown. Cool shadows streak. Combination of scents and smells beguile. Sharp senses, with confidence I rely. My white stick taps out a sweet happy beat. I’m enjoying my walk no longer meek. Feeling I belong, I will stay a while. I’m part of this bustling city, that’s why. Special feelings come now that I am blind. What my eyes don’t see, I see with my mind.

In fall of 1981, the artery next to my optical nerve in left eyeburst, ending sight in that eye due to diabetes that i’d had 33 yrs by then. That was followed by 20 yrs of 2 doz laser treatments inc both eyes, ultimately returning sight to left eye, but taking away ALLperipheral vision. I much admire tthe courage of the blind, seeing w/whole being. So well expressed here. Bravo!

“ What my eyes don’t see, I see with my mind.” what a line to end this very powerful and soulfully moving poem with, felt like reading some rhymes, to get inspired to rhyme, and read this tonight and i must say it really is touching. I know few in real life that cant see , and sometimes i wonder how do they see in their mind, they are very quick to recognize little things and are very sharp too: brilliant take. Love the quote as well. Best wishes and hope your husband is getting better.

Nine long weeks in Hospital and still no sign of discharge. Its been a journey I never want to travel again, having been by his side both day and night. Yes he is finally overcoming all the obstacles that befell him and I thank you for your best wishes Empress. Also thank you for your comment on my poem, much knowledge was gained by my own dear father who was blind.

Quite interesting. I do volunteer work on Wednesday with a blind friend. Amazing what he's able to do with a little help. And he's always cheery. Awesome poem. Soupmail
