Munch( of the scream- fame) observed ..a person believes that all the other portraits are good  likenesses except the one of himself

Poetry too ,when self- assessing can be wayward...a case of being too up close&personal to be objective

One aspect often overlooked is too much editing can destroy / damage to what was a spontaneity happening ( especially imagistic short forms)

And Munch is right, isn't he. We don't see ourselves as others see us and are disappointed when they don't.

Absolutely! I've ruined the heart of a poem to make a better rhyme. But, on the other hand, I think we're constantly editing thoughts, feelings, life ~ often for the better

Brian, we are always critical of our own poetry and see flaws that another will not see to a point. Yet, for me now in my writing, I will pen a poem and I know right away if it is worthy even if no one comments on it, and even it does not place in a contest. I am not measured by any other persons opinion _peace and tranquility _Constance

Hmmm, I am not sure about that. I feel that I know my mediocre poems from my better ones, but maybe I am missing something. I like your phrase for Van Gogh's work as "prolific selfies"!
