GOOD POETRY what is it

Blog Posted:5/5/2021 1:00:00 AM

Can (better yet.. should) poetry ever be  described as 'good'?

Perhaps on reflection the English word 'good ' is to multi-meaning

I think it it good when it reaches the reader and leads them to see and or feel something :)

Brian, I've always believed Bukowski's definition had it right, and fall short, but keep trying!

Brian, great blog! Well to me, it is all about how the poet feels after writing their poem. Does it feel good? Does the the emotion perhaps bring a tear? Was it ripped from your very heart and soul? Is it a visual dream of nature or something beautiful? Does it make you the poet proud? Then, it is a good poem, a worthy poem no matter who else agrees because it is an expression of the writer! Peace _Constance

Ah yes Constance,self-pleasing the berthing of expressive endeavour & the root of all artistic conception

I guess its a question of semantics of the English language( with its five varied 'adjectival 'meanings of 'good') and maybe the word poetry needs to be more specifically qualified eg 'a good sonnet' ..a sonnet .. having the required qualities to a high standard

In some forms wthout grammatical symbols other key aspects are more prominent in particular 'the one breath limitation' requires the 'reader' (reciter) to participate in a more unique interplay and often brings an added value interpretation by the enigma so derived

I agree a lot with what Edward said below. I think he made his own definition of "well written" when he said devoid of grammar mistakes and making sense, etc. Not all people share that opinion of course!!

Andrea is right on the money. One more example of what I meant by "well-written" is how a poem is formatted. For instance, the way Greg, Regina and Constance format their poems. They're are always pleasing to the eyes.

Yes,Andrea, agreeing to differ a concept lost in modern manners

Sure it can. Good is an opinion - and stating your opinion in a way that makes someone feel good about something they created is wonderful.

Yes Avery,a barnabas approach is a winner with me

It is sweet music to the heart and soul. It is a cool morn and a day filled with joy. It is hope coming true and even love once dreamed then realized. It is that which grasped the reader and cries come on out - dance with me. It the essence of the better part of humanity, and it is also, without any doubt so very much more....

It's all perspective, Brian. What is "good" for one reader might be contrived--or even a masterpiece!---for another. It comes down to personal taste in the final analysis. To me, a "good" poem has to be well-written and devoid of grammatical errors and misspellings. It has to flow fluidly, have an emotional impact, and most of all, it has to make sense!
