My Muse Prompts Me
What if I didn't get up this morning? What if I let the rain stop time? But, she said, time won't stop-- For if it did The rain would freeze And never fall to earth. As if to reply to a ghost, I said, Who needs logic? It is enough to remain still And let the sky rotate overhead Unnoticed, To let the sky eat the planets. It would be as if time had stopped , And Jupiter would be as if Frozen in space. Then stay in bed, she said, And watch the flickering Of day and night passing Like a kaleidoscope. Alright, said I, Feeling vastly indifferent. Don't be tense, she said, You act like a thief-- Yeah—a rough thief, Even a violent one, Who nightly prowls back alleys And crowded bar rooms. But maybe you are tense Just because of me. Oh no, I replied, I'm neither tense nor violent. That is just the way you painted me. See how your mind goes. Naturally, she said.
